首先，先澄清一件事情， US News并没有实锤哥大造假，也没有什么把哥大踢出了排行榜， US News的statement说得是“outdated and/or incorrect methodologies in submitting data to U.S. News & World Report for consideration in the publication's 2021 college ranking ”（即哥大在2021年提交本科排名的数据的计算方式是过时且不正确的。）
另外，这件事本身就是哥大的数学教授Michael Thaddeus首先爆出来的，质疑哥大的计算方式。
其实真正有争议的就一点student-faculty ratio，。
而student-faculty ratio是通过 undergraduate class size 和 percentage of faculty with terminal degrees （通俗说就是Phd）这两个指标计算出来的，后一个指标哥大目前改成了95.4%。
出了问题的是前一个指标 Class Size. In some cases, class size data was previously reported incorrectly and not in compliance with the U.S. News instructions. （哥大说自己的计算方式没有按照US News 指导方式去统计）.....prior methodologies used resulted in overreporting the number of classes with under 20 students and underreporting of classes with between 20 and 29 students. ( 过时的计算方式导致算多了多报了少于20人的课程，和少报了20-29的课程）。
换句话说，哥大少报了自己20-29人的课程数量，多报了少于20人课程的数量。
为什么会发生了这种事情吗？哥大甩锅给了疫情。。。
哥大给出的理由：这些课因为疫情改成了hybrid网课，很多课学生实际上课的数量要比计划得多。（线下上课的时候，会严格控制人数，所以计划和实际误差不大。）哥大上报的是计划上课的学生数量。
所以US News也只是说哥大“ discrepancies sometimes quite large which seemed to always work in Columbia's favor.”（有巨大的落差，这种落差对哥大有益）而不是“fabricated data”（造假）
在哥大的数学教授Michael Thaddeus提出质疑后，哥大的教务长Mary Boyce 在今年6月份发表声明We refrain from submitting data to U.S. News and World Report for consideration in the publication's 2022 undergraduate college rankings... We have changed those methodologies for current and future data submissions, as reflected in the newly posted Common Data Sets. （大意就是说我们停止像US News提交数据....我们会改变目前的计算方式，用新的方式像Common Data Sets提交数据）。
这件事不知道为什么，被各种公众号以讹传讹简单粗暴成了“哥大造假，被踢出了US News排名”。。。
