Our US correspondent Mark Stone is reporting from Sderot in Israel and says the Israeli defence minister's update moments ago contained three "significant" points.

The minister's comments were confirmation that Israeli troops were "in the heart" of Gaza City, Stone says.

Gaza City is "one of the most populated areas of the planet and some of the population have moved but by no means all", he says.

Stones notes that for Israeli troops this will be the most "complex urban fighting environment that any soldier will have to deal with".

He says by having soldiers on the ground, any airstrikes "could potentially be more accurate".

The second significant point, Stone says, is that the minister said the Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar had been surrounded in a bunker.

"This is the first time we've heard any indication from the Israelis that they know where the Hamas commanders actually are," he says.

The third significant point, Stone says, is that the minister said "there will not be a technical or humanitarian pause until hostages have been released".

"That speaks to a division which has been so clear within the Israeli war cabinet itself," he adds.
